I had high hopes for this book and some of them were fulfilled but also a lot of potential wasted.
The comparison to Romeo and Juliet was absolutely exaggerated, the similarities were barely noticeable and it was a subplot at best. And I also didn't need another love triangle in my life, thank you very much.
But I loved the concept of the nine Families - how they organized their killings/assassinations, how they prayed to a Goddess of Death and that their kills were a kind of offering to her.
I also enjoyed our protagonist Lea at most times. For being a bad-ass assassin she somethimes behaved extraordinarily stupid and narrow-minded, that was really annoying. My biggest problem was that a lot of characters just felt flat and not well thought-out, I didn't really connect to any of them.
The writing on the other hand was really good - I simply flew through the pages and was pretty suprised when I had suddenly already finished the book.
I originally thought that Lea's storyline would span over all three parts of the trilogy and was quite surpised when I found out that was not the case - the second books revolves around her niece, Allegra. I think that's why Lea's storyline always felt a bit rushed to me - there would have been a lot of potential for a longer story revolving around Lea and her revenge. But now her character development felt too quick and rushed - especially towards the end.
Still - all in all it was a pretty enjoyable read and I am thinking about picking up the next installment.
