The Black Cat Murders by Karen Baugh Menuhin

3.0

3-1/2 Stars - Review of the audiobook

This is the second entry in the Heathcliff Lennox mystery series. Lennox is invited to a country house wedding of an old friend. Before even leaving his own home, he finds a dead man on his doorstep with no idea who he is. And then upon arrival at the wedding he finds that Sir Crispin Gibbons, an opera singer scheduled to perform for the festivities, has also been killed. And soon Lennox finds himself investigating what happened.

I am always on the lookout for a new mystery series and this one is pretty good. Lennox is settling into his amateur detective role and the country house settings work well for these books. I think Menuhin does a really good job of plotting her murders and I did not guess whodunnit in this one. Plus I love Lennox’s dog Mr. Fogg and I especially love how devoted Lennox is to him.

My biggest quibble actually has to do with the narrator of the audiobooks. His voice for all the female characters is really grating. I wish he was given some direction to tone that down. Plus he makes them all sound the same. But it is a small annoyance and the story itself is well done.
