It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey

I’m gonna be honest here: I really thought this book had to be overhyped. I’ve read plenty of Tessa Bailey in my day, and while I’ve enjoyed the experience of reading almost every single one of them, I’m not entirely sure I can remember the plot of any of them. This one, though? She created such fun, dynamic, swoon-worthy characters that it would be impossible to forget them. Honestly, this book is rom-com perfection

Piper Bellinger, party-girl extraordinaire, finally went too far. As punishment for her behavior, her step-dad sends her to exile… in Westport. Why there? Because it is the town where Piper was born and lived until age 4 when her father passed away and her mother fled to LA. Piper isn’t too excited, but it could be worse; her sister Hannah chose to come with her, after all. But something strange happens as Piper begins to put down roots in a place that she barely remembers. And the sturdiest root of them all is Brendan, a burly, local fishermen captain who couldn’t be more different from Piper. After a rocky start, Brendan and Piper begin to realize that they are drawn to each other in ways neither of them have felt before.

Honestly, I can’t decide if I liked Piper or Brendan more, which is very strange for me. Brendan is an amazing male lead; he is sweet and strong and communicative, and I wanted to hug him at all times. But Piper just has so much personality! I normally wouldn’t love a spoiled, rich-girl Instagram star, but I loved that Piper grows without changing the fundamental person that she is. It’s okay to like shopping and makeup and manicures, after all. And even more, I loved that Brendan doesn’t want her to change. He just wants to be enough for her. Ugh, I just loved the hell out of these two, and I also can’t wait to read Hannah and Fox’s story!

“First of all, you don’t have to be tough. Not all the time. I don’t know who decided my perfect, kind, sweet, incredible girlfriend needed to fit some goddam mold, but you don’t. You just be Piper, okay? She’s who I’m in love with.”
