A well written, horrifying horror story about the past and the atrocities of history. Gout has a lyrical way of writing that pulled me in and created some truly terrifying imagery, especially when paired with the audiobook which I greatly enjoyed. This novel would make a great horror movie and has so much to bring to the genre as well as to the topics of colonization, racism, misogyny, and heritage. Only reason this wasn’t a perfect read for me was the pacing. The novel is very slow, which is necessary because there are a lot of characters and background knowledge that needs to be established. Unfortunately because of this I could see some readers being turned off since the actual possession doesn’t occur until over 50% through the
