There is a really fascinating concept here, and copious amounts of diversity and lgbtq+ and chronic illness/mental health rep. We need more books like that.

Unfortunately none of the characters felt well-developed or real. Very two-dimensional paper cutouts of personalities. The characters are also very inconsistent across scenes, possibly due to being underdeveloped. Rory is a horrible reincarnation of the manic pixie dream girl for the new generation and has no chemistry with Gem or any other characters despite being one of the three most important players.

Additionally, I do not think this will age well in terms of technology referenced and dialogue used. It isn’t automatically bad that the references are so current and of-the-moment, but they are used in a way that I fear will be very cringey in about ten years and make this book hard to reread. It’s already a little cringe and outdated.

I am not the target age group for this book, so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt, but it felt like the main character’s struggles with their own identity were overbearing and overshadowed the plot rather than informing it. A lot of the diverse representation felt like it was shoved into each character rather than a natural part of how that character was built and often didn’t impact who that character was in any way.
