A historical fiction that exposes colorism, racism, abuse, family ties, and in the end, an unbreakable woman. I found that this book was a never ending cycle of tragedy, which is why I couldn't give it 4 stars. I did find that the author wrote this book in a gripping way. No matter how many tragedies the main character faced, I couldn't help but continue in hopes that it'll all make sense in the end. I was also just intrigued by this part of Japanese history.

It didn't end the way I hoped but I appreciated the mix of emotions that Lemmie allowed me to experience.
