The Black Widow by Daniel Silva
3.0

3.5 stars, rounded down because of the departure from what makes Silva so great: his protagonist, Gabriel Allon.

I've read (and own) every one of Silva's books. While this one isn't my least favorite, it wasn't one of my most favorite either. Black Widow is full of generous detail, and well-researched locations and events, but while Gabriel Allon, Silva's Iraeli assassin, is in the book, he plays less of a central role, and the book suffers.

I missed the intellect of Allon and the absence of art and Allon's work as an art restorer in this book. As a result, it read more like a political spy novel than the richer, deeper works Silva is known for.
