A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende

This is a lovely book, following a family from the Spanish Civil War to the Chilean revolution covering more than half a century of their lives. It's subtly emotional and written plainly and openly, speckled throughout with Pablo Neruda's poetry. It ignited a stronger interest in both Spain and Chile's history.
