Poison by Chris Wooding

4.0

Poison's sister has been taken by the mean-spirited faeries to be brought to the phaerie lord. Poison sets out to look for her sister. She goes on a quest to the phaerie lord, but this isn't easy.

Review

Middle-grade fantasy/kind of fairytale book. It's really good. Didn't expect to like this book as much as I did.

The Dutch cover is beautiful. It's what has driven me to pick this one up.

The characters definitely all have their own character. Poison had a realistic personality. She made selfish decisions and was a bit arrogant at times. She made mistakes and she felt shame.

My favourite character in this book was Peppercorn. She sounded like a little girl to me, was a bit naïve and overall scared pretty fast.

It annoyed me how many times Poison pointed out that Peppercorn was a little girl and that she felt like Peppercorn was her little sister. They didn't even interact that much.

Didn't get why Poison set out to save her halfsister. Of course, it's her sister but the way her parents treated her was just sad. Her sister was definitely the favourite. If I were Poison, I think I wouldn't go through all of that trouble. Especially because I didn't even get the feeling Poison loved her sister that much.

The writing was simple, easy to understand. It wasn't beautiful, but it did the job.

The setting of the book is wonderful. It's a really cool fantasy world.
The storyline is why I give this book four stars, because it's really well thought out. It turned out to be much more than I expected it to be.

I thought this book was going to be so predictable, but it wasn't. It totally surprised me. The synopsis is really just a summary and not like with some books where the story is explained in detail on the back.

Wonderful story with a wide array of characters.
