The Artist by Anna Haifisch

4.0

Picked this up for a quick, random read at the library. Takes a lot of artist community tropes we're all familiar with and presents them in a novel way that's somehow both whimsical and sardonic. Very funny. The art is original, intriguingly abstract, and endearing. The entire work feels at once sympathetic and self-deprecating, without leaning too far over into sad sack-ism, self-indulgent pity, or cynicism. There are these weird little stories that fall closer to absurdism or fantasy, and I absolutely love them. I like the back and forth between the protagonist, narrator, and audience.
