Rope the Moon is one of the best if not *the* best romantic suspense romance, if not it's the best I've read. I was so excited for the next book in the series and genuinely loved it as well. It can be a standalone and the suspense of it hits a little bit different than Moon (Moon remains God tier to me) but the overall story is 4.75 stars from me.
If you followed along to #freebritney at all or just have empathy/rage for woman who have been manipulated out of their own agency this will feel very poignant. The FMC is a very famous country star who is not doing well under the complete conservatorship of her manager. She escapes to Runaway Ranch and broody MMC Ford is "assigned" to figure out how to make it work for the summer.
I appreciated that the initial misunderstandings were cleared up early and this turned into a friends with benefits trope, one I love because of the angst when they are absolutely delulu about their mutual deep feelings. The summer background scenery and the gorgeous ranch just felt like great escapism to read. Yes there was the overarching gloom and doom of impending danger but I just love how Ava balances it.
My -0.25 is that Ford is a bit of a hothead (fine) but it led to some brawling at times and it verged on repetitive. Like I get there is only one bar in town but how can it be this volatile where bystanders are at serious risk?? It didn't last long luckily and literally everything else especially the scenes on the Ranch I loved.
CW: the FMC has suicidal ideation, depression, and has historical suicide attempt. I personally appreciated how this was handled. I loved seeing rep where medication is paired with talk therapy and it's not some big thing (and it's not an on/off switch "miracle").
Thank you so much for Valentine PR and author for the eARC!
