The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet by Alicia Silverstone

4.0

Note: As I begin preparing many of the recipes from the book (probably the tastiest-looking collection of vegan dishes I have seen yet) I will add them to my review.

I started reading about the benefits of a vegan diet a couple months ago after a friend had switched to this lifestyle with her family and saw big changes. I read cookbooks, selected recipes, planned menus, and experimented with various vegan-friendly products for about one month before going 100% vegan on July 5, 2011. This was one of the first books I explored.

The Kind Diet is divided into two main sections: about 150 pages of information/benefits about living vegan and recipes that are really unique. I found the writing to be very candid and thought this was a great book for someone exploring veganism or just starting out. I plan on preparing MANY of the recipes included in the book and will post info on those as I make them.

A website with forum was created in conjunction with the book, so I created a free profile and started conversing online with others about the lifestyle, food, questions that may arise. Because I don't really know anyone doing this (besides my husband), it is nice to have others to talk to about veganism. I also follow The Kind Life on facebook, which posts good info on almost a daily basis.

We have been full vegan for four days, and I have to say I have already noticed a difference in how I feel. I am not really craving meat or dairy because I have found substitutes that taste just as good to me. I love to cook, so it has been fun trying new recipes for my husband and I. He is also really enjoying it but says he still is missing milk. We're working on it.

I love meat and dairy (especially cheese) so I never really thought I could hack it as even a vegetarian. A couple of books completely convinced me to give it a try and I am excited to keep feeling better, losing weight, and helping the environment. If you thought being a vegan meant eating a plate of rabbit food for each meal, you're wrong! There is lots of awesome food, I am always full, and I get to eat BREAD!

I realize now I sound like one of those people on a soapbox about veganism, but I guess it is only because I am shocked at how this meat lover could eliminate it and feel amazing. :)
