Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder
by Salman Rushdie
A slim account of Rushdie's recovery from an assassination attempt in upstate New York in 2022. The most notable element here is a long, imagined dialogue between the author and his assailant, a young radical, that I think gives the latter entirely too much intellectual heft.
Otherwise, most of this book is devoted to Rushdie's healing from the various injuries he suffered as well as a touching tribute to his wife, Eliza. It's interesting enough, and Rushdie is of course a fabulously erudite and interesting writer. But I think this book would have gained from more time. Funny enough, Rushdie himself was reluctant to embark on this project, but was talked into it by his agent, Andrew Wylie. He should have trusted his instinct.
