Dimaline says herself that she intended for The Marrow Thieves to be a standalone book, and it was definitely clear in how it was written. I was pleasantly surprised by this book, since sometimes unplanned sequels feel forced, but this one didn't. Maybe it helped that Dimaline picked up right where the first book left off, which worked in that it meant there was still action happening, but didn't work in that it meant that Frenchie and the family were still having challenges thrown at them left and right. The plot was interesting and I really liked how everything came together. It started off a bit slow but then it really picked up. I love Dimaline's work, and while I prefer her work for adults, this was still a solid and really enjoyable read.
