A Cross-Country Christmas by Courtney Walsh

1.0

It’s my fault for reading a Christmas book in a month other than December.

This was just a big no for me. This book was toxic soup. There was so many red flags in Will and Lauren’s interactions.

I think it was supposed to be “enemies to lovers” but really it was just “mean girl with insecurities is mad at a hot guy for not throwing himself at her.” I dunno. Will was a “nice guy who made mistakes in high school.” Lauren was “so unique and amazing because she wasn’t like other girls” who, let’s be honest, sexually assaults Will when he’s so drunk he can’t remember it, and then is angry and mean to him forever because he doesn’t remember and profess his love for her. Can you imagine if the roles had been reversed? Bleh. She’s moody and rude and whiny and self righteous. I did not like her at all. The entire book was setting up how terrible Will is for his past mistakes when Lauren’s just sitting there actually being terrible the entire book. She lets Will basically kidnap her and take her all over the place so she can feel validated and follow him around like a puppy. Every time he looks at her or says anything to her she just melts. You can tell me over and over again how strong and wonderful and independent someone is, but it doesn’t matter if they act and think the exact opposite all the time.

It wasn’t all Lauren’s fault though. Will had plenty of “alpha male” yuck moments as well, but Lauren was one of the most cringy female leads I’ve read in a while and it annoyed me that she has my name.
