Before reading this book I didn't know much about Circe beyond what I'd learnt from The Simpsons. We watch as the young Circe, fed up with abuse and shoddy treatment, grows into a powerful (but not all-powerful) witch. I was perhaps a little disappointed that she didn't go full Evil Willow though. She had her moments, of course, but they weren't dealt with in detail. Although the story dragged a bit in places, Madeline Miller really knows how to end a book. It's so emotionally charged that you'll be hugging your Kindle.
