I had a number of problems with this book: it was idealized without being utterly charming; I couldn’t place the village time or in the world; the language in places read like a Jane Austen novel and in others, inexplicably, as modern. I couldn’t buy the relationship between the main characters, either when they were fighting or when they were getting along. The whole thing had a conservative “life was grand when everyone did things the old ways” that I find saccharine and destructive.

However, several of my (homeschooling mom) friends really enjoyed it. So, hey...
