Modern HERstory: Stories of Women and Nonbinary People Rewriting History by Blair Imani

Great accounts of women making history, but...

This book was a pleasantly easy, educational read. Its written for the average person in mind to learn about the contributions of more than 60 BIPOC women from all walks of life who’ve made history breaking race, gender, and even religious barriers. Most of these women are American WOC whom you may be familiar with from the media, entertainment, and politics but whom you may not have known the breadth of their contributions to society. For me, some of these names were new, and I liked learning about the achievements of the women discussed. Others were refreshing faces to see again (Kat Blaque and Jackie Aina top my list of favorite YouTubers, go watch them seriously!). With only 200 pages in the book, covering the accomplishments of more than 60 women kind of felt anti-what this book was for. It felt very rushed, not like a textbook at all, moreso like quick bios. I was also slightly surprised by the fact that the book wasn’t a collaboration from the 60 women mentioned. I thought upon looking at the book cover that this would be a type of anthology where we can read the actual stories of these 60 some girls. But there are little, if any, direct quotes from these women about their stories or journeys, and I found that a bit disappointing. The route this book chooses to take also works, but it’s a basic one, and I would’ve preferred a more personal account of these women’s stories, because allotting only 2 pages per woman is , in my opinion, no different than cramming 4 centuries of American female history into one month.
One thing that wasn’t “crammed” was the visuals!!! The visuals are absolutely gorgeous!
