Uzumaki by Junji Ito

dark mysterious medium-paced

3.0

This collection consists of twenty chapters all centered around the same town, Kurouzu-cho, and the same two main character's, Shuichi & Kirie. Some of the chapters lead into each other, while others are more episodic. Nonetheless they are all about what seems to be a spiral curse.

Immediately you can see how detailed and well done the art is. It can go from something beautiful to something twisted in the span of a panel. Ito is known for his body horror, so expect nothing less here, as that is a main component of the story.

Unfortunately, the characters themselves feel quite bland. They never really develop a personality. I wanted to feel invested in them and their fates at least a little, but just never really could.

The art is ultimately what shines here, as the story is just ok. The spirals are interesting, and how they are incorporated into the art is mesmerizing. We never really get an explanation for what's going on though, but I think the ending is fitting. Considering all of this, it was just an average read for me in the end.
