The last backlist book I had left from Patrick. All her stories are balance between heart wrenching and heart warming. This was one of the most realistic stories about infertility that I have read and she looks at the topic straight on as an absolutely central theme. Layers of family heartache and history are explored in this one with just a hint of, not magical realism per se, but a hint of the supernatural with the addition of the gemstone descriptions, very fun.
