Looking for a unique take on the vampire story after watching Sinners? Compton’s Devils Kill Devils might be for you. After years of sexy vampire stories, I found the truly horrific depictions of the demons in Compton’s book refreshing and very scary. We follow Sarita as she enters a dark world of demons and magic after witnessing the brutal murder of her husband on their wedding night by a mysterious figure who Sarita believed was her guardian angel. Compton consistently amps up the tension, introducing several bloodthirsty, vengeful villains. I really enjoyed the world and lore Compton creates—I thought this might have worked better as a longer narrative or the entry into a series. The ending moves a bit too quickly for me, but overall, I was engaged, terrified, and grossed out the whole time.
