(Belated review- it's been a while since I read)
Read this as part of a bookclub group, and really really enjoyed the conversations it produced. I wouldn't say this book is my Roman Empire but I have, indeed, thought about it multiple times since reading it over a year ago.
Really dark and well-written (even as someone who read the translated English version) foray into the nature of humankind and what lengths people may go to to survive- on both a global scale and a personal one (what you have to tell yourself to cope when you have to work against your own morality, etc).

Graphic: Trafficking, Medical content, Miscarriage, Pandemic/Epidemic, Violence, Death, Slavery, Torture, and Cannibalism
Moderate: Animal death, Animal cruelty, Death of parent, and Rape
