This Present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti
4.0

I've heard Frank Peretti speak, and the man's a very engaging story-teller. I found the same is true in his writing. I had heard different things about this book, good and bad, and I certainly had to raise a theological eyebrow here and there. However, on the whole, I found this book to not only be a creative and engaging narrative but also a prophetic challenge to American Christians. He challenges apathy, particularly in regard to prayer. He also reinforces that the Christian's struggle is not against flesh and blood, and while I occasionally took issue with how that played out it was interesting to see his vision of the spiritual forces at work in characters in all stages of spiritual awakeness.

The book essentially chronicles what it would look like if Satan were to try to take over a town. Again, my vision's a bit different, but I loved Peretti's. At times, the events are emotionally invigorating, and at other times they're terrifying. I think both are good things. Looking forward to the second installment, Piercing the Darkness.
