knspillane 's review for:
Anna Karenina
by Leo Tolstoy
I know this is a classic, "the greatest work of literature ever written," Dostoyevsky called it "sheer perfection" ... but I just don't get it.
I assume you're not actually supposed to like any of the characters, Tolstoy's way of showing us that people are inherently flawed, indecisive, insecure, and unsatisfied? Can't decide who I hated more, Vronsky or Levin, and the female characters just left so much to be developed.
900+ pages just seemed to drag on forever, likely due to my lack of sympathy/connection to characters, but there didn't seem to be enough "stuff" to merit this volume.
(If you loved this book, I would genuinely love to hear your perspective.)
