Summary: I really liked reading this book, but as the book went on, I could tell that Sloan made a lot of choices that, ultimately, were not for me. Between disappointing over-use of pop-culture references and a lackluster ending, I can't recommend it at this time.

Sloan does a dazzling high wire act throughout this whole book. At the beginning, the spotlight clicks on, and the spectacle of the book is laid bare: How could this be? How can I participate in a world so unknowable yet so tantalizingly familiar? I had to glue my eyes to the act and continue reading. The sparkling prose at the beginning was particularly enjoyable.

Then, as the show continues, we witness a few missteps. The pacing falters, or an action scene is resolved too quickly, but each time, quivering balance is regained. Reveals and lore continue en mass, keeping things interesting, but I was frustrated by all the stopping and starting.

Then, in the last third, Sloan constantly winks to the audience, as if to say, "Get ready for the grand finale!" Much like watching the final flip of a circus show and being disappointed, I found myself thinking, "That was it?"

Sloan is a fantastic writer and really cares about his book, and I even appreciated the meditations on life and humanity, but they, too, suffered in the back portion of the book.

I don't regret my time spent reading, however. This book will surely find a great many readers who will sit through the whole performance rapt at attention.
