Love and Payne by Charlie Cochet

Ok I actually kinda liked this up until the last chapters, where it devolved into the usual dumb drama and super obvious villain reveal. Though I did welcome the blessed absence of the main series' cast, maybe that's why I actually enjoyed this, lol.
I had been looking forward to Austen's story ever since he was introduced. He is a bit weird and creepy and stalker-ish, but I liked the wounded, emotionally stunted spy thing he had going on! Zach is a Bear Therian who is super cute and soft, and I thought they were adorable together.
My only issue is that we didn't see much of them together, even if we got so many tiny hints during the series, so them being in love with each other felt so sudden and rushed? Like, Ok, Austen's been stalking him for years (lol) but it doesn't seem like they'd spent enough time together to really get to know the other. I wish the book had been longer and taken more time to flesh out the characters and their bond.
The plot was dumb AF, literally going on a family retreat to a family estate when you are wanted by assassins has to be the most brain-dead plan ever. The action and the villain reveal was as unsurprising and boring as usual.
I did notice that while I'm a hater, I always am very intrigued by side ships, it's truly the one thing that keeps me going. In the main series, I want Dom and West's story, but this one set up a potential Brayden (Austen's best friend and fellow TIN agent) and Edan (Zach's big bro), as well as Bram x Felipe. I want those! Even though I know that if they do happen I'll be disappointed! It's like I'm collecting all the side ships and upcoming disappointments but I can't stop, I'm a side ship whore. I really did like Brayden x Edan though I do wish it hadn't been inst)love/lust not sure what's going on lol. What happened to romantic tension and development
