Conjure Women by Afia Atakora
3.0
I thought that the book dragged on. Nothing compelled me to continue reading other than the fact I wanted to finish the book..
The protagonist Rue was a complex character, not to mention a liar but she has her reasons. There were several liars in that book but it seems that almost everyone lied to others and themselves as a means of survival.
I can’t quite wrap my head around the idea of conjuring curses and magic (like Mae belle turning her man into a tree). Stuff like that goes against my heavily logical mind but my grandma used to say “belief kill and belief cure”. If what you believe helps you survive, by all means.
I don’t want to minimize the book to just the above. Healing, motherhood, sacrifice, belief, racism, colorism … all themes woven into this novel but it didn’t have the umph I wanted. It wasn’t terrible but I’m not impressed.
