The Houseplant
by Jeremy Ray
Is it possible to read a short story from the perspective of a plant and get emotional? I'm surprised to say this, but the answer is a big yes.
The House Plant is the short but heartwarming story of George, a little fern. He doesn't want to be purchased because it doesn't want to live in an apartment, but be outdoor, next to other plants, free. One day however a woman goes in the story and buys it. George quickly becomes a listener of her thoughts and worries, a witness of her life... a silent friend.
In around 30 pages Jeremy Ray writes a story that is entertaining, rich in emotions, complete. During the first few pages I really had my doubts because the unique POV of a little plant was something that I've never experienced in my life, but they quickly disappeared when I noticed I could not stop reading: I laughed, I shed a tear, it made me look at my plants with different eyes. It's beautifully written and it's a little gem. Do yourself a favor and read it!
4 stars.
* I'd like to thank Jeremy Ray for providing a copy of his story in exchange for my honest review.
