The Flight
by Julie Clark
I can't begin to explain the rollercoaster of emotions I went through while reading this book.
My heart goes out to all the people who have to bear the pain of abuse while keeping up appearances to the rest of the world like everything's okay because they are so afraid of the power their abuser has over them whether mental, physical or social.
Sometimes speaking up is never enough to take down and escape these vile people and their actions cannot be excused but at times, this twisted way of loving is all they know.
I totally understand the dejection Eva felt when people looked at her through the lens of an addict's daughter whenever she did something - whether good or bad. All she needed was a sense of self and identity and to be shown love even if for a little bit. How I wish Liz had walked into her life earlier to heal the hole in her heart created by her family's rejection.
We all need a Liz in our lie to show us that our past mistakes don't define us and even if everything else fails, it could still end in a good outcome. Someone who doesn't judge us based on our past decisions.
The way my heart tore when the epilogue shattered all my hope that Eva was still alive, just waiting for the right moment to reappear to Liz. All her hopes and dreams of a new start laid bare to us in her final moments before the crash with a now heightened sadness. I am bawling my eyes out. To think that, in the end, Eva gave up everything to give Claire a fresh start.
Dex's betrayal can also not be underestimated. Yes, she never viewed him as a friend but that tiny sprinkle of hope whenever they talked, believing that he was different. 12 years built on lies. I wish things could have been different for everyone. No one deserves to feel like they are constantly in danger or being watched, cautious with every move- unable to start a new life, afresh. Up until the epilogue, I kept questioning why Eva's pov was written in 3rd person but now i realise why it was necessary-as she was deceased.
I kept 2 songs on repeat throughout the 2nd half of this book - erase me and doomsday by Lizzy McAlpine. I feel like they carry the gravity of these 2 women's feelings. This book needs to be turned into a movie and if it is, these songs have to be included.
Would definitely recommend this book to others although it has me in shreds!!!
"Everything you ever wanted is on the other side of fear."
