An Extraordinary Union
by Alyssa Cole
I really enjoyed this!
Admittedly, I was wary considering the subject matter. I tend to avoid stories set during the Civil War because the majority of them revolve around black pain. I'm pleased to say this story didn't, but that's not to say that there weren't a few points that were hard to read. With the main female character posing as a slave, there were threats and treatment she endured that one would expect considering the time period. That being said, I still enjoyed reading the story.
This novel is very well written. It's clear research went into writing it from the fashion to the tools of the time to the lingo. There's a good case intermeshed in the romance and it's paced really well. The action scenes were great, as well.
I liked Malcolm and Elle as characters. I liked that they both had their strong suits and it wasn't as though one of them was more important to the cause. I loved their chemistry. A lot was done to make it clear that Elle wasn't pressured in any way and Malcolm understood his inherent privilege. They made sure to acknowledge that he had respect for her before the reveal that she's a spy. I liked his protectiveness over Elle and his dedication to her. I also thought Elle's struggle to accept her feelings for him made sense and the gradual acceptance was paced well.
All and all, definitely a recommend from me. It's definitely entertaining and well written. While it didn't leave me as breathless as other romances I've read, I definitely enjoyed reading it.
