How are you gonna be in a love triangle with the same guy???đ
Okay, where do I start? I liked the writing style of this, there were moments that were a bit emotional and I liked the ending. I liked the friend characters. ButâŚ
This was just ALL over the place. I got so confused, and I really think it was a pacing issue rather than a me issue (actually maybe not because this book is rated so highly⌠well, I donât care. I didnât like the pacing.) The first third was so boring. Once âJamesâ got introduced and we got more stuff about his cookbook, it became more interesting.
Clementine: she was changing her mind about everything every two seconds. âI love Iwanâ (after theyâd spent a total of maybe 2 days max with one another) âI canât love Iwanâ âI love my jobâ âI hate my jobâ. There were so many details we were told about her but none of them seemed connected. I found it super annoying how she was so unfair on Iwan that he changed because âheâs not the guy I knew, how did he change so fastâ IT WASNT FAST! IT WAS 7 SECONDS AGO FOR YOU AND 7 YEARS FOR HIM! âB-but I havenât changed since then!â Well yeah, again because itâs been about 7 minutes.đAlso she didnât try to call her Aunt or send her a letter anything while she was back in the past? I get that this is a romance but come on. The Aunt was mentioned at least every second or third page, so⌠why? She got immediately so swept up into this bland red headed dude that she forgot about her Aunt literally immediately after telling herself over and over to not fall in love? Honestly I just found her annoying and couldnât resonate with her most of the time. Also I found it kinda funny when she had her realisation moment that Iwan is the guy she bumped into at the restaurant and it was supposed to be finding out along with the reader when Iâm pretty sure we all caught thatâs who he was literally the second it happened in the first chapter (at least i did).
Iwan/James: âŚ..meh.
He was just boring. All I know about him is that he had a grandpa and has a whisk tattoo. I didnât really like him at the start, I didnât really like him at the end. He was just⌠bland. And I think this is really what it comes down to. If I donât like the main characters then I probably wonât like the book that much or root for them to be together. In my opinion their chemistry was close to non existent. He also had little to no reaction to the whole seven year slip thing, and also barely found it weird that she was sleeping with and kissing his past self? Thatâs soooo weird. Why does it kinda feel like she was cheating on him with himself and why was he fine with it? Hes changed a lot since emotionally and physically so itâs basically a different person. I just.. idk. It feels like selfcest. And how didnât he notice anything weird when they went to the park and she just disappeared as soon as they got outside the door? Like.. come onđ
I just found the whole thing really confusing, there were things that heâd experienced seven years ago that he was kinda using against her but that she hadnât experienced yet, but he knew about this? He knew about the seven year slip but he⌠idk my brainâs hurting. Also what was the whole thing about ânever fall in love they never stayâ. If the Aunt and Vera stayed on touch, what was the reason why they couldnât be together? Wdym âthey never stayâ? She litro did bro you were writing letters to each other, and YOU CHOSE to leave. Why even have this in here when 1. Itâs not a rule that was followed by anyone involved and 2. Itâs not even true. Cause the whole thing with Clementine and Iwan was meant to revolve around âoh we canât be together cause I canât fall in love with youâ but that was never a reason in the first place because she never followed the rule? She said near the end âIâm going to break this rule just onceâ like girlipops you never followed the damn rule in the first place donât act all heroic nowđ¤Śđźââď¸
ALSO WHERE WERE THE STAKES???? There was no reason they couldnât be together the entire time (se met previous point)! And she knew who he was, theyâd met so many times in current day! If Clementine just got over herself they probably couldâve been together by halfway through. The cookbook thing wasnât even really relevant either to why they couldnât be together.
So you might be asking, if I disliked the pacing and characters so much, then why did I give it 3 stars? Honestly, I donât know. I think I liked the basic concept of it (even if it was done poorly imo) and the writing style was kind of nice, the background characters were likeable too. Idk, I think Iâm just overly critical lol. Iâm open to reading another Ashley Poston book but I think only if itâs not magical realism because the magical realism wasnât magical realisming
