Call for the Dead: A George Smiley Novel
by John le Carré
adventurous
mysterious
Diverse cast of characters:
Yes
Far more murder mystery than Cold War espionage, and my first guess about the mystery turned out to be correct.
This was fun, but I still don't know whether I'd call it "stimulating and challenging" or "needlessly confusing" that so very much of the story was hidden in subtext. I play the role of detective myself as I interpret facial expressions, verbal exchanges, logistics, etc, because while some hints are more heavy-handed than others, Le Carré will almost never explain it to you.
I won't rush to my next novel in the George Smiley series, but I'm glad to have been introduced and I liked this.
