Oh my gosh.
When you're a kid, they teach you about racism in America. You learn about Britain colonizing the world. You watch, "The Color of Friendship" from the Disney Channel. You get a brief passing mention of apartheid in high school. But to hear about it firsthand from Trevor Noah, who lived it..it's heartbreaking. Which is not even close to a strong enough word. And apartheid isn't even the only tough topic that he covers in this autobiography.
But Trevor's story also has some humor (he IS a comedian after all),that matter-of-fact humor from someone who lived a story. I won't lie that there's times I felt guilty for laughing (the demon story. I laughed SO much). It doesn't make his story any less poignant or true.
I'm going to pick up the YA version of this for my classroom library. Because it's a story everyone should read.
