The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold

5.0

4.5 stars. Fabulous world-building - loved the parallels to medieval Spanish history. The characters were compelling and fully developed, especially Caz, Iselle, and the Gods. The concept of the Quintarian religion was fascinating, though the half star was lost because portions of the free will vs. will of the Gods debate was slightly unaccessible to this reader. Also contributing to the half star lost was that the sequel focuses on Ista, who was one of my least favorite characters here. I'm therefore unlikely to ever read the rest of the trilogy, though maybe she'd improve through her own narration, and the third book seems to focus on a completely different cast.

EDITED: 5 Stars. Recently I re-read Chalion and loved it even more the second time, especially since I picked up on the finer points of the theological debating. And I then picked up "Paladin of Souls" so I can no longer say that I'm deterred from continuing the series.
