Good Samaritans
by Will Carver
This review also appears on my blog along with many other: https://livemanylives.wordpress.com/
When you pick up a book by Will Carver your heart sinks. Any thoughts of writing a novel yourself are flung in the bin. What would be the point? Take your hopes and your dreams and chuck them on the compost heap with all the other crap.
Anyway, he’s done it to us again. He’s fucked with us again. Well, technically this was the first time he did it but, because I wasn’t aware of Good Samaritans before I read Nothing Important Happened Today, for me it’s again. He’s fucked with me, again.
With Seth and Maeve and Harley and Ant, but not with Detective Sergeant Pace, never with Detective Sergeant Pace. Praise all that is good for Detective Sergeant Pace. He draws you in and then just as you think you can see where you’re heading, you’re having fun but you’re also sliding deeper into your chair getting comfortable, he smashes your nose with his big hammering fist, again and again.
Fuck.
It starts with a phone call. A freak occurrence that connects two phone lines unexpectedly and four lives. Seth can’t sleep, he needs to talk, to make a connection. Harley keeps trying to kill herself and needs an attentive listener to release her of her burden. Ant wants to help, or thinks he does, tells himself he does, haunted by the memory of his best friend’s dead body.
The sex and the violence are in your face and theirs. It’s pretty sick and depending on your outlook you will use the different definitions of that word to describe it. The characters aren’t very appealing but they are compelling, you don’t want to look away. After he’s lured you in, he just keeps flipping you round until you’re dazed. You’re as wired as Seth after his midnight caffeine fix.
Come on Detective Sergeant Pace, for your sake and ours, come on!
Fuck.
Lots of stars, highly recommended and all of that.
But, fuck.
