I’m feeling rather Lukewarm. I enjoyed this, as well the first book, but I found the core conflict a little weak and wandering. I think the demon-wrangling was introduced in this book, not the previous, and I think that’s why I’m feeling a little unmoored that something so critical in this book wasn’t mentioned in the previous book.
I feel like the argument between Rhys, Moira, and David was dealt with too neatly. I remember this quote about dialogue in books and I feel this applies to this book and the previous, “the characters talk like they’re trying to get a good grade in therapy.” I think this is why the inter-personal conflict feels kinda weak. I know that the characters will work out, so why worry?
Max was the only concern, but considering this is a trilogy, with the third book likely focusing on Moira, I knew that Max was going to be a passing thing. Though, his motive was boring. I was kinda hoping he’d do something more damaging than just breaking David’s heart.
I still enjoyed this book though, but I can’t rate it any higher than 3.25.
