Flight Risk by Cherie Priest

adventurous funny mysterious medium-paced

4.0

Similar to the first in the series, as expected, with many of the same pluses and minuses of the earlier book.  The supernatural aspect is, if anything, even more subtle here, but that’s okay.  For me, the standout aspect remains the nicely depicted characters and their cleverly humorous dialogue - there are numerous laugh out loud moments.  Then there are additional attempts at humor that didn’t work as well for me, but probably would for other readers.

The plot is pleasantly light for a murder mystery, with plenty of clues dropped for the reader along the way, including likely suspects to consider and discard.  The intertwining of the two related mysteries is masterfully done, and there were no obvious giveaways for me until the reveal(s).

The narrative does get ever so slightly meandering at times, possibly a sign of Priest letting the characters’ dialogue go where it takes them, to the point that some of it could have been cut without a loss to the story.  The resolution is a bit darker than I’d have preferred, but necessary to reach a satisfying conclusion.

In the end, I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as Grave Reservations, but still enough to round up to four stars.
