We Are Okay
by Nina LaCour
“I have only just learned how to be here. Life is paper-thin and fragile. Any sudden change could rip it wide-open.”
I really wanted to absolutely love We Are Okay but I don’t think it was for me. The first half of the book was mostly boring, nothing much happened and I felt detached to the characters. The second half however was more enjoyable to me, especially once everything comes together. There are two main timelines: the past and the present. The past gradually makes the reader understand why Marin left her old life in San Francisco. We Are Okay explores loneliness, grief and depression via a slow calming and beautiful writing. The slow pacing was what kept me detached in the beginning but the advancement of the story in second half of the book kept me engaged.
