The Kingdom of This World by Alejo Carpentier

5.0

This book gave me a vibe of Color purple with immense tragedy that the violence that it portrayed towards some of the women in this book. Moreover, this book had a Roots by Alex Haley vibe with explicit nature of describing certain aspects of tragedy that happens throughout the book. Kingdom of This World transformed me into one of these characters with its act of confusion. The confusion of power and leadership, the confusion of race, and the confusion of overall class. Thisbook stands on its own till this day because of its exploration of race and how many of the racial disparities that happen even though not as most times explicit, it is still present that minorities can relate to as they read this book. Lastly the theme of class is well executed in this because it’s detailed and explicit explanation of how class has not only benefits but disadvantages too.
