House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

4.0

This book was an experience that I’m unsure if I was fully prepared for..

Mark Z. Danielewski makes you work your ass off to read this book and then leaves you feeling vulnerable and perplexed after the fact.

Even though it can be a little pretentious at times, the story and formatting had me in a complete chokehold. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it. When I was reading it, I had tunnel vision.

I may not fully understand what is truly going on here, but I can almost guarantee that I will never stop trying to decipher the puzzle that is House of Leaves, and I think THAT is the beauty in it all.

I would like to note that I am not the biggest reading enthusiast. I enjoy reading warm, cozy stories and a classic “who done it” in my down time. Just little reads to take the edge off. To say that I was intimidated by this one is an understatement but I am so glad that I pushed through. This book is for anyone, despite what anyone (or any page;) tells you. How you read it and interpret it is subjective. Just do it and hate me, I mean thank me later.
