Maisie Dobbs

I had WAY different expectations going in than were delivered. I thought I was getting a historical mystery, but this is more of a character driven, setting heavy historical fiction with a little bit of romance thrown in.
I actually like historical fiction (though I don't love setting heavy books). The beginning was really slow for me and I almost put it down. I actually loved the flashback scenes in the middle of the book, giving us the detective's background. I actually liked them more than the "mystery" scenes at the beginning and was kind of wishing that the book was about her background instead of the mystery.
The end picked up for me and, even though it was a little predictable, it was more of what I was expecting.
Overall, I would say don't go into this expecting a mystery. If you enjoy historical fiction with a lot of description and introspection, then you would probably enjoy this one.
