The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and the Struggle
by L.J. Smith
While there are distinct differences between these first two books (in one volume) and the tv show, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Spotting the elements from the original story that inspired parts of the tv show is easy. I can see why certain things were changed in the screen adaptation — drama, backstory, relatability, etc.
As for these first two pieces of The Vampire Diaries saga, I could not hardly put the book down. Elena, the primary female protagonist, feels a bit narcissistic, but I still oddly find pieces of her relatable. The history and flashbacks are woven into present times nicely and only add to the excitement of the story and its characters. The supporting characters all work well in moving events along. I do wish that more development would be given to certain characters, but I hope to find that in the next volume with the third and fourth books. I’m riveted to the point of already having my bookmark in that volume, because I must know how the story concluded originally in its own right AND compared to the tv show I love.
