Carrie's War by Nina Bawden

hen it narrates the narrative of Carrie and her younger brother Nick, who were evacuated to Wales during the war in the mid-1940s. Carrie and Nick are only a year and a half apart in age, but you'd think there'd be a wider gap because Nick is rather immature and naive, and Carrie is closer to puberty than he is. Auntie Lou, one of their foster carers, is kind, but her controlling and devoutly religious older brother Mr Evans is a nasty, dictatorial old grouch, so Nick is understandably lonely at first.
