Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

5.0

This book was written, it feels, precisely for my 14-year-old self, who was (and still is) deeply offended by Susan's exclusion from Narnia after Prince Caspian, just because she was "too interested in boys and lipstick." The premise hit all of my very ingrained fiction sweet spots - magical schools and world hopping and magic systems that have a solid logic and potential for worldbuilding (in this case pretty literally) - but the plot was, delightfully, nothing I could have anticipated. I'm very excited to read the second book, once I get back from the wilderness.
