Dark Harvest
by Norman Partridge
5/5 narration. Listened in almost a single sitting while online holiday shopping. Really set the mood for chrsitmas.
Reminds me a lot of the film Trick r Treat. Is it the best horror story? No. Is it wholly original or ground breaking? Also no. But is it fun as hell? Absolutely.
Much like the 2007 film Trick r Treat, Dark Harvest expands on the ever popular theme of Halloween curses. Small towns, evil authority figures, and seemingly wretched nightmares hellbent on revenge.
But Dark Harvest shines best with its tone and mood. It continually leans in at every chance. It’s bloody and cruel and over-the-top in just enough places to rev up the stakes faster than you can say big black Cadillac. Its setting and characters are fun, almost noir, against the early 60s backdrop.
Vile police officers, ruthless jocks, and one of my favorite nightmare abominations in recent memory. Overall, this is a solid seasonal read and something I’ll probably pick up again next time I’m really yearning to capture the reason for the season.
