This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay

5.0

Didn't expect this book to hit as hard as it does. I don't think you ever really realise what the NHS and its staff go through on a daily basis until you read something like this. Adam gives such a detailed account of his days, from finishing his training and spending his first day on a ward to the very last. It's a hilarious but heartbreaking montage of moments, that give great context and information on doctorly duties. I think it's easy to forget, when you're in a non-medical field - with your weekends off, fixed hours and basically guaranteed pay rises - that doctors, nurses and other members of our health service are in fact human, and not some sub-species of genetically-modified homo-sapiens with super powers. They just human. We need to remember this more, and make sure we're standing up for our health care professionals that spend so much of their time looking after us. We need to keep the NHS going, but we need to make it sustainable. We need to stand up for our health care providers. We need to make it more humane.
