How do you even rate a book like Beowulf? Do you rate it based on its importance and impact? That's a five, for sure. Or how you felt about it the first time you read it? That would probably be a lot lower. Or how about your fondness for the story, largely through cultural osmosis? It's left fingerprints on so much of the literature that followed it, that the cumulative effect is almost immeasurable. Especially in genre fiction.

I've read Beowulf before, more than once, but this is the first time I've picked it up and just read it for the story. A feat I probably couldn't have accomplished without the aforementioned previous rereadings and cultural osmosis, because there is a lot of context to place it in. And you know what? I kind of enjoyed it. So I guess this rating, in the end, is mostly based on that.
