✨ from the ground, we stand. from our ships, we live. by the stars, we hope ✨
this is the third book in the wayfarers series, set in a future in which humans have long left earth and are now living in space / on different worlds. and this one follows a bunch of humans living in the exodus fleet ! the ships were originally built when the earth became uninhabitable, to set out and find a new home. the fleet now permanently orbits a star, and while humans have long since made contact with other species, and many are living on other worlds, many still live their whole lives on the ships
I literally cannot express what a wonderful book this was !!! a very different pace to the first two books in the series. we follow five different points of view of people living in the fleet, and it's a cosier, more thoughtful, slice of life sort of story. but it was so fascinating! I loved the characters we focused on and I loved learning more about exodan culture! you can see echoes of humanity as we know it, but also all the ways they have clearly had to change in order to thrive out in space.
it's such an interesting concept, to consider humans away from earth, in the midst of a universe brimming with other species, and trying to figure out how they fit in amongst them whilst also trying to hold onto their own customs and ways. and while it is touched on in the first two books, this one was very much a human orientated story.
there was something so deeply moving about the whole thing, and it had me crying quite a lot. I loved the queerness, and the kindness, and the traditions, and I find the whole concept of the world becky chambers has created to be so full of hope it makes my heart ache just to think about it.
so yeah if you can't tell I really truly loved this one. I recommend it a million times over!!!
