A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

5.0

Truly one of my top five favorite books. I cried several times and have never felt so connected to a storyline or characters. The author does an absolutely fantastic job with character development and relationships between characters.
ELAIN AND NESTA
Watching the development of Elain and Nesta accepting their new life and place in the Night Court was incredibly heartwarming and real. Maas is very realistic when it comes to trauma and how characters respond to huge events, making it relatable and heartbreaking. I have been frustrated with Nesta and her cold attitude throughout the series but by the end of this book I felt I understood her far better than I ever did before. Im incredibly excited to begin reading her story. Elain is lovely and it was wonderful to see her finally break free from her traumatic encounter with the Cauldron and watch her gain her life back.
LUCIEN
I would have loved a little more Lucien as I have a soft spot for him but I genuinely have minimal critiques of this book. I was very pleased with his patience regarding Elain and am excited to see if/how that pans out in the future.
FEYRE
Hands down my favorite main character in any book I have read. I love her fearlessness and boldness and that she is a far cry from the typical damsel in distress. My heart broke for her several times throughout the book, especially when Rhys died. She is so strong and capable and I love that she faced her true self in the Ourborous and never faltered.
RHYS
Always the best. Rhys has been a consistent character throughout the series so I don’t have much to say. Obsessed with his selflessness and ability to put his family first. I cannot begin to express how excited I am to see how they portray him in the Hulu series.
MOR
SO HAPPY with her character development! I was with Feyre getting frustrated with her games with Azriel but after their heart-to-heart I love her even more. To be able to face Keir and Eris with the poise she has is incredible and I’m super impressed with Maas’ decision with her character development.
CASSIAN AND AZRIEL
I would love to see more regarding Cassian and Nesta but I think I’ll get my fill when I read their book. Cassian and Azriel have been consistent through the series and I loved reading their dialogue with Feyre. It’s so raw and their instant familial connection made me so happy for all of them. It broke me to see them both injured in the war but alas they survive.
CRITIQUES
I would say that there was a bit of frustration that no major characters were lost in the war because it does not seem very realistic, but I can’t say I’m sad to see everyone stay. I thought Amren’s exit was beautiful and perfect and it was almost instantly reversed by having her back as High Fae. I suppose they killed the King and the girl’s father, but neither of those characters are highly involved or really important. I guess I’m used to far deadlier writing, but I would like to see a bit more ruthlessness if the novel focuses on war.

By far the best book in the series, I’m going to have serious book hangover after I finish the next two books in the world.
