Financial Feminist: Overcome the Patriarchy's Bullsh*t to Master Your Money and Build a Life You Love by Tori Dunlap

3.0

So far, I’ve already read iterations of the author’s personal experience from other authors and fin-coaches on youtube. I was really looking forward to the feminist angle here, and I say that with hope and good will. However, I’m disappointed in the fact that these authors rarely start from $0, and that their “big break” is more of a big push up from their parents pockets.
No matter how aware Tori Dunlap is of her privilege, she misses the point when she tells me that I -or any other woman- too can follow her advice and get to the same or similar place, when neither of us starts the financial race in the same place or conditions. I’m not saying she gives bad advice, on the contrary, I believe that if you can spare a couple hundred dollars or even less each month you can reap the benefits she is talking about. Unfortunately that isn’t the case for the majority of women in the US, and even less for women like me: I’m Cuban, I make the equivalent of $15 USD a mont. In spite of having a college degree and being fluent in 4 languages the last time I bought a pair of shoes was in 2017, and the smartphone I own is a hand me down.
The book might be good, even great, but not a great fit for most women. Financial advice presented as recipe for success, independence etc is very limited and only works in certain conditions such as living in a country with an advanced state of capitalism and an initial balance that isn’t zero or in negative numbers.
